All started with game boy which was an 8bit handheld video game device developed and manufactured by nintendo.The console was released in japan on 21 april 1989 , in north america in july 1989 and at europe in 28 september 1990.
The specifications of game boy:
CPU: Custom 8-bit Sharp LR35902 core at 4.19 MHz. This processor is similar to an Intel 8080 in that none of the registers introduced in the Z80 are present. However, some of the Z80's instruction set enhancements over the stock 8080, particularly bit manipulation, are present. Still other instructions are unique to this particular flavor of Z80 CPU. The core also contains integrated sound generation.

It was released in 1998, 9 years after game boy for japan , north america and 8 years for europe.
The difference between game boy and game boy color was minor but the only you could step on was that the actually game time you could play was more than thirty hours which was awesome for only 2 batteries in addition with the consumption of the game boy which as you see was 15-30 hours with 4 batteries AND the most exciting feature that you play games with color of course.
(something you may not know is that you can manage the speed of the game boy (color) with overclocking the processor to run at 4--6--8+ Mhz or downclocking to reduce it!)

The game boy color sold 118.5+million units ,including the game boy.
The most selling games of game boy was tetris with 30million and pokemon blue and red with 23million sales.
The most selling games of game boy color was pokemon gold and silver with 14.5million sales.
Also a feature in game boy color and almost on every other next generation console is the backward compatibility which means you can play game boy games on your game boy color console!
As a conclusion i will tell my opinion for the game boy,it is really a great handheld system.you are going to have a headache if you play it for too long cause you can't have your head in a straight position with the console but the gaming experience and the hours and hours playing pokemon and super mario (the kids till 90' will remember) was awesome! In the end is more than reliable i don't know for the others but i had bought 3 and none of them is broken till today.In addition with other consoles Xbox etc which died in 3 years of not so hard gaming.
